“...Common Fires perfectly melts together the serene qualities of singer-songwriter music with the abstract tendencies of prog into one beautiful project.”
“...melody akin to Ben Howard or Bon Iver’s rawest moments, [...] McAlpine’s abilities are on full display as guitars, piano, and melodica dance around his intuitive timbre..."”

Common Fires, the stage-name of Canadian multi-instrumentalist songwriter Caleb McAlpine, is a musical project designed to fuse captivating melodies and shape-shifting textures together. Described by the Permanent Rain Press as having “[melodies] akin to Ben Howard or Bon Iver’s rawest moments”, and as having both “the serene qualities of singer-songwriter music [and] the abstract tendencies of prog” by KelownaNow, Common Fires is equal parts ambitious and moving.
McAlpine has had his music represented in advertisements, documentaries, and on CBC Radio. Having performed in both bands and as a solo artist for over 15 years, McAlpine cut his teeth on collaborating with other musicians--initially, during a 4 year tenure playing in London, UK, but more recently, as a fixture in Andrew Judah's live band in Kelowna, BC. Common Fires broke out with debut single "Avery", a traditional song, and now introduces “Overcoat”, a deeper, more complex heart-wrencher that carries a tone equal parts dark and confident.
